Soweto

The South Western Township or in short Soweto began as a shanty town in 1930 allocated for people of colour. Today Soweto is home to more than 1.3 million people making it the largest township in South Africa. Home to prominent political figures such as Nelson and Winnie Mandela, Archbishop Desmond Tutu, Walter and Albertina Sisulu, to just name a few, Soweto has the only street in the world to house two nobel prize winners namely Nelson Mandela and Desmond Tutu.

Soweto has been a centre place for many political campaigns against the apartheid government, the most notable being the Student Uprising in 1976. Under the leadership of Tsietsi Mashinini hundreds of students took to the streets of Soweto to protest against the government’s policies of being taught in Afrikaans, the results were fatal, numerous students were shot and many died during the protest the most famous being Hector Pieterson and Hastins Ndlovu.

Come join us as we take you on a tour around Soweto where you will experience first-hand the emotional history and wonderful culture the largest township in South Africa has to offer.
